Global Investing Giant Jim Rogers Warns of Cyclical Downturn ‘Soon’

“FreedomFest doesn’t just ride the wave, it invents the wave.” — John Fund, National Review

It was a triumph! Our 10th anniversary celebration of FreedomFest was a huge success, with over 2,100 subscribers, wealthy investors and concerned citizens joining us at the Paris Resort in Las Vegas.

CNN did a major story on us. Watch it here.

We had a great time celebrating Steve Forbes’ 70th birthday… taking the historic photograph of the top libertarians… and interviewing and arm-wrestling William Shatner (!). All in all, we had over 300 speakers, panels and debates, including keynote speakers Greg Gutfeld, John Stossel, Steve Moore, John Fund, Andy Puzder and Kennedy in our mock trial (The Police on Trial).

William Shatner, age 86, and Mark Skousen have a wrestling contest. Guess who won?

Forbes Magazine Outlives the Bolshevik Revolution

One of the highlights was the panel “100 Years of Forbes,” with Steve Forbes and Bill Baldwin, a long-time editor. Steve shared a personal story about how his grandfather, B.C. Forbes, turned down tens of millions of dollars to sell the publication in 1927 and nearly lost the company three years later in the Great Depression. Rather than succumb to bankruptcy, Forbes’ grandfather enacted pay cuts and helped the company survive, ultimately culminating this year with its 100th anniversary.

When asked to give a prediction of what Forbes Media might be like 100 years from now, Forbes said he expected it would be following the spirit of B.C. Forbes and still reporting about the “spirit of capitalism.

“Capitalism leads to extraordinary entrepreneurial spirit,” Forbes said.

Bill Baldwin also spoke about the 100th anniversary of the magazine by saying, “Forbes outlived the Bolsheviks.” Except in Venezuela!

The Best Business Ventures: The Pitch Tank

We have our own version of “Shark Tank” at FreedomFest called “Pitch Tank,” run by Angel Investors. Steve Forbes and Kevin Harrington (one of the original Shark Tank judges) were among the judges in the “Pitch Tank” competition, which was won by Revive, an automated external defibrillator (AED) medical device powered by smartphones.

At the Saturday night banquet, a wealthy venture capitalist came up, introduced himself to me and said his firm had decided to invest $100 million in various companies participating in the Pitch Tank and that had booths in the exhibit hall at FreedomFest. You never know who you are going to meet at our show.

The Inside Story of ‘The Greatest Libertarian Show on Earth’

My wife Jo Ann and I wrote a 48-page illustrated pamphlet, “The Story of FreedomFest” — hot off the press and only $5, or free if you order the entire MP3 or CD conference recordings. Call the same number as above to order.

Can the Republicans Get their Act Together?

We honored Senator Mike Lee at this year’s conference by giving him the annual Leonard E. Read Book Award for his new book, “Written Out of History: The Forgotten Founders Who Fought Big Government.” The book is available here at amazon.com.

Senator Lee and several congressmen appeared discouraged by the failure of the Republicans to pass tax and regulatory reform, but still thought it could be done without compromising libertarian principles. I asked the all-important question, “Why is it that the Democrats can unite to pass ObamaCare and Dodd-Frank in 2010, but the Republicans can’t get their act together to pass their legislation in 2017?”

The Democrats are known as the evil party, but the Republicans appear set to remain the stupid party if they can’t pass tax and regulatory relief.

Steve Forbes, who celebrated his 70th birthday at our conference, said that advocates of a single-payer health care system would take a model that has failed the U.S. Veterans Administration and force it upon all Americans. To really fix the U.S. health care system, he recommended ending the mandate that every employer buy insurance. He also said that the United States should allow nationwide shopping for health insurance, requiring equal tax treatment for all, and forcing every hospital and clinic to post prices for services.

Frankly, I’ll be shocked if the Republicans can push through their medical alternative to Obamacare. They have a better chance of cutting taxes.

At FreedomFest and here at Forecasts & Strategies, we don’t look to Washington to solve our problems. We must act on our own. For example, why wait for health care reform? We had a great session sponsored by Liberty Healthshare entitled “Escaping the Political Medical System: How to Gain Your Healthcare Freedom Today — No Lines, No Waiting, & Much Less Expensive.”

We also had a breakout session with Bill Baldwin, former editor of Forbes on “Beat the IRS: Seven Clever Ways to for Investors to End-Run the Tax Collector.” All of the seats were filled and other attendees were standing in the room to listen!

We can’t wait for Washington to reduce our taxes and minimize dumb regulations, we have to do it ourselves.

Are We Near the Stop in the Stock Market?

What about Wall Street? Commodity guru Jim Rogers warned that the U.S. economy’s historic pattern of enduring a downturn every four to eight years indicates people should prepare for such a prospect to occur in the next 2-3 years. Worse, because today’s debt load is larger than in 2008, we could be in an even more severe problem the next time the economy falters.

“If you’re not worried, you are not knowledgeable,” Rogers said.

I chaired a session with Rob Arnott, who the Wall Street Journal labeled the “godfather of smart beta,” on the topic, “My Favorite Money-Making Strategy, and Investments to Avoid.” He warned against load funds, annuities, hedge funds and private equity, but liked my strategy of investing in quality companies that pay high and growing dividends. He and Cliff Asness wrote an academic paper entitled, “Surprise! Higher Dividends = Higher Earnings Growth.”

Arnott agreed with Rogers that the stock market is no bargain. In fact, we are within a year of enjoying a record — the longest bull market in history!

Subscribers of my Forecasts & Strategies newsletter have been fully invested and have taken full advantage of the opportunity. We also set stops to protect our profits.

Buy the Recordings at a Bargain

There is one bargain left in the marketplace: You can listen to all the sessions at this year’s big show by ordering the CDs or MP3 recordings. Each session is only $5 to download, or only $325 for the entire program on a thumb drive (MP3). If you want the CDs, the cost is $495. Cutting Back: Trump Sets the Right Tone

“Economy is a great source of revenue. And no revenue is sufficient without economy.”

— Benjamin Franklin

In the most recent first-quarter reports on gross output (GO) and gross domestic product (GDP) growth, federal government spending is apparently growing at the lowest rate in years. Federal spending grew at an annualized rate of only 0.5% in nominal terms. (State and local government grew at a significantly higher rate of 4.1%.)

For all of the criticisms of Donald Trump, the slowing down of big government is not one of them.

In fact, Trump has set the right tone personally. He has agreed to a salary of only $1, giving the rest back to the Treasury. His administration is spending $5 million less of taxpayer money on staffers than his predecessor did. Trump employs 377 people at the White House, costing a total of $35.8 million, while former President Barack Obama paid $40.9 million for 476 employees in 2015.

Michelle Obama retained 24 staffers in the first year of the Obama White House. Melania Trump currently employs four people. Forbes columnist Adam Andrzejewski concludes:

“Projected four-year savings on the White House payroll could top $22 million.“ He goes on to say that Trump’s daughter, Ivanka Trump, and her husband, Jared Kushner, both advisers to the president, are not accepting any salary. Most top White House staff — including Steve Bannon, Kellyanne Conway, Omarosa Manigault, Reince Priebus, Sean Spicer, and 17 others — make $179,000 annually.

While $22 million in savings is a tiny amount compared to the nearly $20 trillion national debt or the $3.9 trillion federal budget, “it could be a leading indicator of Trump’s commitment to cut waste, fraud and taxpayer abuse,” Andrzejewski said.
